Service 1
A domestic violence counsellor may help clients to:
- Understand different forms of abuse, including physical, emotional, psychological, sexual, financial and coercive control.
- Process trauma and its effects, such as anxiety, depression, PTSD, low self-esteem and grief.
- Develop a personalised safety plan for themselves and their children.
- Rebuild confidence, independence and healthy boundaries.
- Learn coping skills for managing stress, triggers and emotional distress.
- Access referrals to legal services, housing, financial assistance, Centrelink, child protection, police, medical services and support groups.
- Understand the impact of domestic violence on children and support their recovery.
Counselling is not about telling someone to leave a relationship. Instead, the counsellor supports the person to make informed decisions at their own pace while prioritising their safety.
The goal is to help survivors recover from the effects of abuse, regain control over their lives, and connect with the support they need to move forward safely.
